A Little Background on Asbestos
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral composed of thin, fibrous crystals. It was widely used in construction, insulation, and various industrial applications due to its heat resistance, strength, and insulating properties. There are six types of asbestos minerals, with chrysotile (white asbestos) being the most common.
Despite its practical uses, asbestos is highly toxic when inhaled. Its fibers can become airborne and, when inhaled, lodge in the lungs, leading to serious health issues such as asbestosis (lung scarring), lung cancer, and mesothelioma (a rare cancer of the lung lining). Due to these health risks, many countries have banned or heavily restricted asbestos use. Although, similar to lead, it is still found in older buildings and products.
